Formula One is a sport like no other. The fastest sport on Earth combines elite teamwork, cutting-edge technologies and innovation, top-notch performance, and exceptional driving skills, while teams develop race cars capable of competing against their rivals through 24 races across five continents.
In 2024, the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team set out on a new course to become the world’s most sustainable professional sports team. This is underpinned by becoming the first motorsport team to sign the Climate Pledge, committing to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
Although reaching this goal is not without challenges, the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team has a history of defeating obstacles and coming out triumphant. The team brings together more than 2,000 dedicated and determined people who design, develop, and manufacture the cars driven by seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton and Grand Prix winner George Russell. Winning seven consecutive double Drivers’ and Constructors’ World Championships from 2014 to 2020 and securing a record-breaking eighth consecutive Constructors’ Championship success in 2021, the team is one of the most successful in the sport’s history.
Connected by their shared passion for technological innovation and sustainability, BCSE partner Signify became the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team’s official lighting and sustainability partner this summer. Signify’s world-leading, energy-efficient LED lighting technology already powers iconic night races in Singapore and Las Vegas. This partnership, driven by responsible innovation, will allow the partners to leverage synergies and work together toward shared goals. Signify’s innovations in lighting will support the team’s ambition to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, serve the well-being and performance of drivers and team members, and deliver powerful experiences for fans, trackside and at home.
“We are proud to partner with the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team, a team that is determined to lead both on and off the track,” said Signify CEO Eric Rondolat. “We share a passion for responsible innovation to drive progress in our industries and beyond. Our joint commitment to act responsibly will lead us to develop transformative and disruptive new technologies that elevate performance to the benefit of people and the planet.”
Scaling energy-efficient LED lighting is a powerful tool in the climate action toolbox. Completing the switch to energy-efficient LED lighting would reduce total global GHG emissions by 1%, equivalent to half the emissions caused by aviation, more than enough electricity to charge every electric car currently on the road, or power over 100 million heat pumps. In the United States, a wholesale shift to LEDs could reduce CO2 emissions by 800 million metric tons per year and save $26 billion in energy costs.
As the world leader in lighting, Signify has led the transformation and rapid decarbonization of the lighting industry through energy-efficient LED, circular, and connected lighting innovations. The company recently announced its 2040 Climate Transition Plan, setting out its vision to reach net-zero by 2040. Signify has reduced greenhouse gas emissions across the full value chain by 50% since 2019 and continues to advocate for energy efficiency and an accelerated energy transition. With the new partnership comes a commitment from Signify to share knowledge and expertise to support the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team in developing its own Climate Transition Plan.
