The International Council for Sustainable Energy co-hosted a UNFCCC side event in partnership with the Alliance to Save Energy and the Corn Refiners Association on how to answer the global stock take through clean energy, energy efficiency, and a circular economy. The event opened with a presentation from Diala Hawila of IRENA on the scale of renewable deployment worldwide.
The side event discussed how the path to decarbonization calls on a broad portfolio of clean energy and energy efficiency technologies across the built environment and power sector. It also explored how building a circular economy and taking a holistic systems approach that embraces equity and partnerships, will deliver long-term and sustainable success to achieve our climate goals. Opening remarks were delivered by Diala Hawila of IRENA on the World Energy Transitions 2023 Outlook.
Speakers on the first panel delved into the near-term goals of the energy transition. Moderated by Anna Freeman of the Clean Energy Council, the panel included Paula Glover, President, Alliance to Save Energy; Bill Kent, Executive Director, Association of Energy Engineers; John Titchen, Director, Goldwind Australia; and Ahmed Idriss, Director, Environmental Policy, Capital Power.
The second panel explored how building a circular economy will ensure long-term success of both the energy transition and decarbonizing our economies. Moderated by Jamaica Gayle of the Plant Based Products Council, the panel included Emanuele Paolo Sicuro, Director of Government Relations, Cargill; Kevin Rabinovitch, Global VP of Sustainability and Chief Climate Officer, Mars, Inc.; Helen Walter-Terrinoni, Global Decarbonization Lead, Trane Technologies; and Kolja Kuse, Chairman, e5.
