US – China Leadership on Climate Change Paves Way for New 2015 Climate Deal
Washington, DC – The Business Council for Sustainable Energy’s President Lisa Jacobson issued the following statement on the announcement by US President Barack Obama and China President Xi Jinping on US-China climate change and clean energy cooperation:
“The announcement of the historic bi-lateral deal between the US and China is a significant and positive step for the global negotiations towards a new international agreement in Paris in December 2015, and is founded on a commitment to growing use of clean energy technologies and resources.
The utilization of the existing clean energy technology solutions in the Council’s coalition of companies from the energy efficiency, natural gas and renewable energy sectors will play a key role in the United States meeting the President’s target of 26-28% greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) reductions by 2025. Investments in these sectors over the past six years has already lead to a transformation of the US energy landscape and put the US more than half-way towards a 17% GHG emissions reduction target by 2020, based on a 2005 baseline that the Obama Administration adopted in 2008.
The Council also commends the strengthening and expansion of areas for cooperation on clean energy research and development and deployment – notably in building efficiency, clean vehicles, carbon capture use and storage, renewable energy and smart cities. China’s commitment to diversify its energy portfolio to include 20% from zero-emissions sources will also be a significant investment opportunity for US clean energy businesses.”
