About the BCSE

The Business Council for Sustainable Energy (BCSE) is a coalition of companies and trade associations from the energy efficiency, natural gas and renewable energy sectors. Established in 1992, the Council advocates for policies that expand the use of commercially-available clean energy technologies, products and services.

About the position

The summer fellow will assist BCSE staff with policy research, communications and event coordination.  Qualified candidates should have interest in the business, sustainability, energy and environment fields and/or communications and relevant experience through academic and/or previous internships or employment.

The position will be based in the BCSE’s office in Washington, DC. The fellowship will run approximately 6-8 weeks, 20-25 hours a week from the beginning of June to mid-August, depending on the Fellow’s academic schedule and Congressional calendar.  A small stipend will be provided.

The summer fellow will have the opportunity to:

  • Research current energy and climate change legislation and policies to support BCSE advocacy.
  • Gain knowledge of the operations of a trade association, from data management to external communications and policy advocacy.
  • Work with a small, collaborative and highly experienced BCSE team.
  • Observe and interact with leading government relations executives in BCSE sectors.

About Jan Schori

The Fellowship was established in 2008 to honor Jan Schori upon her retirement as General Manager and Chief Executive Officer of the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), the nation’s sixth largest publicly owned electric utility. Ms. Schori also served as the chair of the Business Council for Sustainable Energy’s Board of Directors. During her 14-year tenure as CEO, the utility earned a strong reputation for its renewable energy and energy efficiency programs as well as the national number one ranking in commercial customer satisfaction by JD Power & Associates.  Prior to serving as CEO she spent 15 years on the legal staff at SMUD, the last 5 as general counsel.

About the Jan Schori Summer Fellowship

The Business Council for Sustainable Energy seeks one fellow to assist with communications, event coordination and policy research.  Qualified candidates should have interest in the energy and environment fields and/or communications experience.

Jan Schori Summer Fellows work alongside the BCSE’s fulltime staff in the Council’s downtown Washington, DC offices.  The Fellowship runs approximately from the beginning of June to mid-August, depending on fellows’ academic schedules and on-going congressional activity.

  • First-hand observation of the work of leading government affairs professionals from businesses in the energy efficiency, natural gas and renewable energy sectors.
  • Knowledge of the operations and management of a trade association.
  • Experience using industry-standard communications and content management software.
  • Working with a small, collaborative and highly experienced team on expanding the clean energy sector.

Following their work with the BCSE, previous Jan Schori fellows have gone to work for the Office of Management and Budget, the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, the Maryland State Energy Administration, the Texas Legislature, and various clean energy businesses and business organizations.

The Fellowship was established in 2008 to honor Jan Schori, former BCSE Board Chair and general manager and chief executive officer of the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) upon her retirement.  Ms. Schori is currently of Counsel at Downy Brand in Sacramento, CA, and serves as an independent trustee on the North American Electric Reliability Council Board of Trustees and as a Board Member on the Climate Action Reserve.

About the Jan Schori Summer Fellowship

The BCSE seeks one fellow to assist with policy research, legislative analysis, membership coordination, communications, and general office management.  Qualified candidates should have interest in the energy and environment fields and/or legislative experience.  Responsibilities related to communications include press outreach, website maintenance and social media.

Jan Schori Summer Fellows work alongside the BCSE’s fulltime staff in the Council’s downtown Washington, DC offices.  The Fellowship runs approximately from the beginning of June to mid-August, depending on fellows’ academic schedules and on-going congressional activity.  The position is unpaid, though stipends may be available for qualified candidates.
