Statement on Introduction of Revised Shaheen-Portman Bill
Clean Energy Industries Applaud Senators
for Bipartisan Leadership
Washington, DC (February 27, 2014) — The Business Council for Sustainable Energy (BCSE) released the following statement from BCSE President Lisa Jacobson in reaction to today’s introduction of a revised version of the Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act by Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Senator Rob Portman (R-OH):
“The Business Council for Sustainable Energy applauds Senators Shaheen and Portman for their dedication to improving our nation's energy productivity. The Senators have worked long and hard over the past several years on their legislation – known as the Shaheen-Portman bill – which will help consumers, businesses, and industry save money on their energy bills.
“According to the 2014 edition of the Sustainable Energy in America Factbook, over the past five years our country's energy use has declined by 5 percent, carbon dioxide emissions from the energy sector fell by over 10 percent and our economy has grown by 6 percent. We need to build on this momentum and enactment of the Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act will help do that.
“Even with already strong bipartisan support, Senators Shaheen and Portman have continued to make changes to, and improve, the bill since it was brought to the Senate Floor last September.
“The Council is supportive of the bill’s broad focus on energy efficiency in residential buildings, commercial buildings, industry and the federal government. With the House of Representatives poised to take up energy efficiency legislation next week, it is our hope that the bill can soon be enacted.
“BCSE commends Senator Shaheen and Senator Portman for their bipartisan leadership. With the re-introduction of this legislation, and their commitment to seeing it get over the finish line, they are helping to set our country on the course towards greater energy efficiency and economic growth.”
