President Obama and Congress: Reliable, Clean Energy Is Essential for Economic Growth and Job Creation

Washington, DC —Ahead of President Obama’s speech this evening before a joint session of Congress, the Business Council for Sustainable Energy (BCSE) released the following statement from BCSE President Lisa Jacobson:

“Job creation and economic growth are the nation's top priorities. U.S. clean energy industries—energy efficiency, renewable energy and natural gas—have a strong role to play in increasing economic productivity and growth in this critical period.

“Through the consideration of federal proposals to create jobs, Congress and the Administration should consider investment in clean energy infrastructure as a fundamental tool for economic growth. Our nation needs a portfolio of technologies and resources to ensure reliable, affordable, secure and clean energy to fuel economic activity; natural gas, renewable energy and energy efficiency collectively offer these benefits.

“Clean energy sectors are providing significant economic benefits today and can continue to fuel future economic growth. From next generation energy efficiency and smart energy technologies that are helping consumers save money and better manage energy use, to a robust natural gas industry that is providing cleaner and more affordable energy for American families and businesses, to renewable energy and fuel cell industries that are increasing exports and expanding domestic manufacturing, clean energy sectors make valuable contributions in all parts of the country and are vital to our economic future.

“Predictable federal energy and tax policies are essential to unleashing the investment in energy infrastructure our nation needs now.  Federal action can provide stable tax and regulatory conditions and can remove barriers to clean energy investment and deployment that would promote long-term infrastructure development.

“The Business Council for Sustainable Energy stands ready to work to enact federal policies that respond to our nation's economic challenges—understanding that reliable, affordable, secure and clean energy is a foundation for productivity and job creation."
