Clean Energy Industries Praise President Obama’s Commitment to Midterm Reduction Goals for COP-15

Washington, DC – November 24, 2009: The Business Council for Sustainable Energy (BCSE), an industry coalition of energy efficiency, renewable energy and natural gas businesses and trade associations, commends President Barack Obama on the White House’s announcement of a potential U.S. emissions reduction target in the range of 17 percent below 2005 levels in 2020 to be offered at the United Nations Climate Change Conference next month in Copenhagen, Denmark.

“Ambitious, reliable midterm reduction commitments are the key element to driving the deployment of existing clean energy technologies,” said BCSE President Lisa Jacobson.  “It is the rapid deployment of these technologies that will allow us to achieve significant emissions reductions in the near-term cost-effectively and drive investment and job creation in the clean energy sectors,” added Jacobson.

“President Obama’s continued commitment to the international negotiations process – reinforced by today’s announcement – sends strong signals to the world that the U.S. is ready to commit to the policies needed to ensure environmental sustainability and drive economic growth,” Jacobson noted.

The BCSE will lead a delegation of more than 100 senior executives from clean energy technology businesses to Copenhagen for the negotiations.  The Council looks forward to working with its sister organizations (the International Council for Sustainable Energy, the UK Business Council for Sustainable Energy, the Clean Energy Council [Australia], and the European Business Council for Sustainable Energy) to push for a strong international agreement that includes ambitious midterm reductions goals and market-based policies.
