Clean Energy Businesses Urge Swift Action on Shaheen-Portman Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act, S.1392

Washington, DC – The Business Council for Sustainable Energy (BCSE) urges swift action and support of the Shaheen-Portman Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act, S.1392.
As the first stand-alone energy bill  since 2007 came to the Senate floor today, BCSE President Lisa Jacobson remarked  “The bipartisan Shaheen-Portman bill would apply practical, cost-effective measures to address energy consumption, and spur private sector utilization of energy efficient technologies throughout the economy.

“Between 2007 and 2012 energy demand in the U.S. fell over 6 percent while over the same time period GDP grew at 3 percent, showing that the U.S. can have economic growth while using energy more efficiently,” commented Jacobson.

According to the Sustainable Energy in America Factbook 2013, released by the Council and Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), affordable, homegrown and clean energy sources are powering the U.S. economy with jobs and investment, and are promoting the security and diversity of our energy supply.  The market analysts at BNEF attribute the reduction in energy use largely to the deployment of energy efficiency technologies.

The Shaheen-Portman bill will allow the U.S. to make our economy more competitive by saving money, wasting less energy and creating more jobs.  It is estimated that S.1392 could aid in the creation of 136,000 new jobs by 2025 and save consumers over $13 billion a year by 2030. There has already been strong bipartisan support surrounding S.1392 as it passed through the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee with a vote of 19 to 3 in May 2013.
Jacobson affirmed “The benefits of energy efficiency are clear. The Council urges the Senate to vote in favor of the Shaheen-Portman Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act, S.1392.”
