State of the Union Presents Opportunity to Build Momentum for Bipartisan Action on Energy in 2011
Washington, DC —The Business Council for Sustainable Energy (BCSE) released the following statement from BCSE President Lisa Jacobson ahead of President Obama’s State of the Union Address:

“President Obama and Congressional leaders from both parties closed 2010 on a truly positive note, finding common ground and putting into law the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010. The extension of tax cuts for clean energy businesses contained in the negotiated package will help spur continued development, manufacturing, and job creation from our industries in 2011.

“The tax deal also signaled a willingness on both sides to focus on bipartisan solutions to the challenges our country faces. As we look to move beyond the recovery and set our nation on a path towards sustainable long-term economic growth, we need to build on that spirit of cooperation and consider initiatives that will unleash private capital in critical energy and infrastructure markets.
“President Obama has an opportunity to strike that kind of productive tone in his State of the Union Address by focusing the nation and Congress’s attention on our country’s energy future and the potential that lies in fully developing America’s renewable energy, energy efficiency, and natural gas resources. Increasing the efficiency of our homes and industrial facilities and deploying technologies and fuels that clean the air and keep energy affordable are crucial priorities for our nation’s competitiveness, public health, and prosperity. While views on policy may differ, the President can put us on the path towards a healthy, productive conversation in his State of the Union Address. We ask for his leadership and vision to make sure America is focused on our energy future and the economic development and jobs clean energy sectors contribute to our country.”

On Wednesday, January 26, the BCSE will host a briefing for members of Congress and congressional staff to highlight the work being done today by BCSE members to 1) deliver safe, reliable and lower-cost energy to our troops and 2) drive U.S. economic growth and job creation. An agenda for that briefing is available here.

The Business Council for Sustainable Energy (BCSE) is an organization dedicated to implementing market-based approaches to reducing pollution and providing a diverse, secure mix of energy resources. Founded in 1992 by senior executives in the natural gas, energy efficiency, electric utility, and renewable energy industries, the Council offers a distinct, business-oriented perspective on energy, environmental and sustainability issues. BCSE’s members have combined annual revenues of over $650 billion, providing America with clean energy services, technology products, and power generation.
