BCSE Statement on the 5th Anniversary of the Paris Agreement
Coalition Affirms Value of U.S. Diplomatic Re-engagement and Partnership with Clean Energy Private Sector
Washington, D.C. – On the eve of the fifth anniversary of the Paris Agreement on climate change, the Business Council for Sustainable Energy president Lisa Jacobson issued the following statement:
“The BCSE joins the global celebration of the Paris Agreement on its five-year anniversary, as its signing was a historic achievement in international diplomacy. Equally impressive is the growth and broadening of the climate action movement witnessed since 2015. This community of actors now includes significant commitments by the private sector, cities, states and others to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and change their ‘business-as-usual’ operations to better align with the goals of the Paris Agreement.
“One of the many values of the Paris Agreement is that it advances actions by all countries and creates opportunities for cross-border innovation, capacity building and investment. This type of cooperation through the Paris Agreement is an essential driver of clean energy deployment and helps countries both reduce emissions and enhance resilience against the impacts of climate change.
“The coming year will be critical for policy makers as national governments formulate their next round of nationally-determined contributions and craft economic stimulus measures. Clean energy industries are a ready and willing partner to help governments unlock greater action, leverage private capital, and deliver multiple benefits for economic growth and climate action.
“The BCSE looks forward to the return of the United States to the Paris Agreement by the incoming Biden-Harris administration, and in partnership with the private sector and Congress, the creation of durable climate change policies and renewed investment in our clean energy sectors.”
Additional reflections on the Paris Agreement anniversary can be found in this BCSE blog post.
The BCSE will release in mid-December its recommendations to the incoming Biden-Harris administration for Executive Actions for Increased Efficiency and Clean Energy Deployment.
