BCSE Members in Fortune's 2009 Most Admired Companies

March 2009 - BCSE Member companies Sempra Energy, Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG), Pacific Gas and Electric Corporation (PG&E), Caterpillar, and Wal-Mart have been recognized in Fortune magazine's 2009 "America's Most Admired Companies."  Caterpillar was ranked no. 1 among all companies in the Industrial and Farm Equipment industry and no. 35 in the pan-industry top 50 list.  Wal-Mart also finished top in its industry (General Merchandisers) and placed 11th on the top 50 list.  Sempra, PSEG, and PG&E all made the top ten list for the Electric and Gas Industry, placing second, fourth, and ninth, respectively.

To construct its 2009 “Most Admired” list, Fortune and the management consulting firm, Hay Group, surveyed more than 4,000 corporate executives, directors and financial analysts.  Respondents at the largest U.S. corporations were asked to rank the top 10 companies in each industry segment based on nine criteria:  innovation; people management; use of corporate assets; social responsibility; quality of management; financial soundness; long-term investment; quality products/services; and global competitiveness.  Only those companies that scored the best in these criteria made the “World’s Most Admired Companies” list for their industry, according to the magazine.
