BCSE Joins Coalition of Energy Industries to Voice Opposition to Latest Round of Tariffs on China

Washington, DC – The Business Council for Sustainable Energy (BCSE) joined other energy businesses and trade associations today in an industry letter to voice opposition to the proposed tariffs on approximately $300 billion worth of Chinese products.  The letter cited the tariffs’ detrimental impacts to domestic clean energy industries.

BCSE President Lisa Jacobson, who will testify at the public hearing hosted by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) on June 18, commented on the BCSE views of the proposed tariffs:

“The existing tariffs are already hurting the energy efficiency, natural gas and renewable energy sectors, which are the segments of the American economy that have experienced tremendous growth over the past decade. This latest round of proposed tariffs will further exacerbate the negative impacts being felt in these sectors.

“Today, these clean energy sectors support over three million jobs in the United States. These industries are poised for significant growth in the years ahead, provided they have stable market conditions. The tariffs are an unnecessary obstacle to this positive growth trajectory.

“While the Council appreciates the administration’s efforts to address China’s unfair trade practices, the exchange of escalating tariffs with China is not the appropriate remedy.

“We stand ready to work with the administration to keep the United States in its position as a global leader in clean energy, and to ensure that the technologies of the future are manufactured in America.”
