14.9MW Fuel Cell Park Breaks Ground Today in Bridgeport, CT

Bridgeport, CT — BCSE members FuelCell Energy, Inc. and  Energi Insurance will join executives from Dominion today at 11:00 am for a groundbreaking ceremony at the Dominion Bridgeport Fuel Cell power station in downtown Bridgeport, Connecticut. Invited guests include Governor Dannel P. Malloy, Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch, U.S. Representative Jim Himes and other dignitaries.

“Ultra-clean and efficient power generation that supports local jobs in an economically attractive manner, such as the Bridgeport fuel cell park, is a win for all of the stakeholders involved,” said Chip Bottone, President and Chief Executive Officer of FuelCell Energy, Inc.  “This multi-megawatt fuel cell park is an example of sound policy that benefits public health, power reliability and the economy.”

FuelCell Energy Inc. will supply five Direct FuelCell® stationary fuel cell power plants and an organic rankine turbine that will convert heat from the fuel cells into additional electricity. FuelCell Energy has expanded its Connecticut manufacturing workforce by more than 20 percent or more than 50 jobs in the past six months, reflecting demand such as this Bridgeport fuel cell park.  The project is scheduled to be completed and placed into operation in late 2013 and will generate 14.9 megawatts of power.

“As new technologies such as fuel cells reach maturation, warranties are critical to promote the confidence that manufacturers have in their products and drive investment,” said Brian McCarthy, Chief Executive Officer of Energi, Inc. “Energi designed the Bridgeport Output Performance Warranty in order to provide critical protection for the expected output of the system. By combining outstanding partners like FuelCell Energy and Dominion with in-depth analysis of the technology and performance history, Energi was able to help the continued growth and success of sustainable energy.” Energi, along with its partner Hannover Re (HRE), specifically developed the Output Performance Warranty (OPW) Program that will provide coverage of the system’s annual megawatt—hours (MWh) production. The warranty coverage provides risk mitigation for both the owner and manufacturer.

Dominion will sell the output of the fuel cell power station to Connecticut Light & Power under a 15-year fixed energy purchase agreement.  The project supports Connecticut's clean energy goals while producing significant economic development benefits for the state and the City of Bridgeport.
